Can Trust Begin with Pajamas?
Finding Purpose and Leading with Love: A Conversation with Genevieve Pitturo
The Big Idea
Trust doesn’t always emerge from sweeping reforms or formal initiatives. Sometimes, it begins with something as small as a pair of pajamas: a reminder that someone sees you, cares for you, and wants you to feel safe.
In this week’s Trust Be Told, I sat down with Genevieve Pitturo, founder of Pajama Program (now Beyond Bedtime). What started as a simple question (“Can I bring pajamas for these children?”) grew into a nationwide movement that has touched millions. Her story reminds us that trust isn’t abstract. Trust is lived out in the everyday choices we make to extend compassion, meet basic human needs, and affirm dignity.
Before you listen, picture this: a group of children huddled together on cots and futons in a bare emergency shelter. Their clothes are the same ones they arrived in; they are ill-fitting and stained. A young girl clings to the corner, entirely wary of strangers. When Genevieve kneels beside her with a small gift, the girl shakes her head and whispers a quiet question: “What are pajamas?”
That moment cracked something open in Genevieve. It wasn’t just about pajamas. It was about what pajamas represented: safety, comfort, belonging. Within that question was an invitation to reimagine her life, not as a television executive climbing the corporate ladder, but as someone who could bring dignity and love to children who had been forgotten.
Two decades later, Genevieve has built Beyond Bedtime (formerly Pajama Program), a nonprofit that has distributed more than eight million pajamas and books while teaching leaders around the world what it means to inspire trust through connection and compassion.
Why This Conversation Matters
Genevieve’s journey is not just about pajamas; it’s about the courage to leave a predictable path, listen to an inner voice, and lead differently. Her work challenges us to consider what leadership rooted in empathy, vulnerability, and love might look like in our own lives and institutions.
